The Elder village model aims to:
In 2020, the Constellation Project conducted data analysis of First Nations communities with high needs for accommodation for older community members. The Narungga Nations and Point Pearce South Australian communities were identified and approached by Constellation Project with an offer of collaborative support, led by community. These communities had identified the provision of an elder village as a strategic priority enabling a series of community consultation workshops and the first feasibility report to be delivered. The concept has since evolved into a First Nations led project to design, build and operate First Nations Elder Village for the Narungga Nations and Point Pearce South Australian community – to realise their vision of returning to country and ageing in place.
The feasibility study for the Narungga Elder Village was completed in Jan 2023, bringing phase 1 of the project to a close.
The Fulcrum Agency worked closely in consultation and co-design with the Narungga community and leaders to complete this study, and it has been endorsed by the Narungga Community.
This study will provide guidance throughout the life of the project, developed through an iterative process that will continue to deeply engage the Narungga Community throughout its evolution.
As at May 2023, the next major step is to complete masterplanning, including confirmation of the site, before moving to securing funding to build and operate the Elder Village. Narungga community leaders have identified two potential sites for the aged care facility in Point Pearce. Three concept masterplan options have been developed to go to a co-design workshop for consideration as part of phase 2. These options are not the only or final design options.
